Know Your IT Certifications

Certifications are a part of life in the IT industry. You may be asked why you don’t have a specific one, or have to explain why another is important. But the fact is that it’s something hiring managers and companies pay attention to.

If you’ve been ignoring certifications, you may feel a little overwhelmed looking at all those acronyms. Or you may be wondering what additional certifications you might be interested in. Either way, we’re here to go over some of the big ones.

Today’s information comes to us from this article. We’ll list some popular IT certifications, and the requirements for getting them. It’s a big list, so we’ll pack in as much as we can.

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE): 1-2 years of design, installation, configuration, and troubleshooting network experience, and passing the test
Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP): 2 years of IT experience, and passing 5 exams
Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS): 2 years of specific tech troubleshooting

Basic A+: 400 hours of hands-on experience
Network+ or Linux+: Pass exam with at least 720/900

Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA): pass the exam
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP): CCNA certification, and three 2-hour exams
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE): 1 of 7 tracks requiring 8 hours of lab work and passing an exam with written section

Apple Certified Support Professional (ACSP): pass the exam
Apple Certified Technical Coordinator (ACTC): pass the exam
Apple Certified System Administrator (ACSA): pass 4 exams

International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium
Certified ISSP (CISSP): 5 years in security, architecture, and design, and pass the exam

Information Systems Audit and Control Association
Certification (ISACA): 5 years experience IT security consultant or auditor, and the exam

Project Management Professional
PMP Certification: college education and 3 years project management experience. 200-question exam
